Newsletter, Winter 2008: The Linguists, the language hotspots and Australia
Our first newsletter, Volume 1, Issue 1. Read it: Winter 2008 newsletter
In this issue:
- The Linguists. The film by Ironbound Films, starring Dr. Greg Anderson and Dr. David Harrison, was selected for the Spectrum: Spotlight Documentary section of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. PBS would air it on February 28, 2008, UNESCO planned to premiere it in Paris on February 21, and it would screen in select theaters in the U.S. and Canada that week.
- The Global Language Hotspots list. On September 18, 2007, at a joint press conference with National Geographic, we launched the Enduring Voices Project and the hotspots list. The story was carried by Reuters, AP, the New York Times and USA Today and by news outlets around the world, and the October 2007 National Geographic Magazine printed a map of 13 hotspots made by Living Tongues.
- The first Enduring Voices expedition. In July and August 2007, Greg Anderson, David Harrison and photographer Chris Rainier visited Aboriginal communities in Australia: the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education, Wadeye, where Murrinh Patha thrives and Magati Ke barely clings on, the Yawuru people, and speakers of Walmajarri at Kimberley Interpreting Services in Broome. The field report has the full story.
- Bringing voices to the future, our mission: to promote the documentation, maintenance, preservation and revitalization of endangered languages worldwide through linguist-aided, community-driven multimedia language documentation projects.
