The name for the river comes from the colour of the water, made a muddy red from the silt. The use of <Dhearg> in place of the expected <Ruadh> is suspected to be due to the nature of the river, which is well known for being <Angry>, intense and dangerous as many undertoes will pull swimmers below the surface.
