This Living Dictionary is for the Shauki language spoken by Shauka tribe in Johar, an area in Tibet border of mid Himalaya. It is a dialect of Hindi, just like kumaoni. It's original name was Rangkas which was changed to Suki khuun and ultimately to Suki and then Shauki.

The trade with Tibet came to an abrupt end after the Indo-Chinese war, after the occupation of Tibet by China. The Shaukas reside in the Johaar Valley of Uttarakhand and have their own unique culture and language which is in the danger of being lost.

The dictionary is compiled by Gajendra Singh Pangti with the support of some elderly members of  the community. Mr. Pangti, a Shauka himself has authored a number of books on history and culture of Shauka community.
