About

The Mising Living Dictionary is a project by the Tani Language Foundation, with digital training assistance provided by Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages. This dictionary is being constructed in 2025 by Takar Mili, Hariprasad Doley, Migom Pame and Pranjal Panging with additional help from Lenin Doley. It is currently under construction. ___________________ About this language Mising, alternatively known as Mishing or Miri, is identified by ISO-639-3 code "mrg" and glottocode "misi1242." It belongs to the Eastern Tani branch within the Tibeto-Burman (Trans-Himalayan) language family. The Indian Constitution officially recognizes the community as "Miri." The Mising population is predominantly located in the upper Brahmaputra valley, specifically in the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, and Sonitpur in Assam. Additionally, Mising communities are dispersed in certain regions of Arunachal Pradesh. As of the 2011 census, the Mising community's current population is 629,954. The Mising language exhibits ten varieties: Pagro, Délu, Sa:yang, Mo:ying, Oyan, Dambug, Samuguriya, Bebejiya, Bongkual, Bihiya, and Tamar.
