Lung’Ie [luŋɡíɛ] (ISO 639-3 code: pre), literally ‘language of Príncipe’ or ‘language of the Island’, is also known as lungw’Ie, lingw’Ie, Principense, or Creole of Príncipe. It is a highly endangered Portuguese-lexified creole language spoken in Príncipe Island, in São Tomé and Príncipe, a multilingual country located in the Gulf of Guinea. Its origin is linked to Portuguese exploration and the kidnapping and confinement of African populations during the 16th century.

This dictionary is the result of academic research led by Prof. Ana Lívia Agostinho, professor at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC - Brazil), with the undergrad student, Janine Silva and the Lung'Ie speakers Severina Gomes Furtado Pernambuco (Dinha) and José Napoleão (Mestre Juju), who lent their voices to exemplify the pronunciation of the words. The data presented in the dictionary was collected by Prof. Agostinho in 2019, during fieldwork on Príncipe Island with the community’s permission.

The main point of this work is to provide a support tool for teaching lung’Ie in schools on Príncipe Island in order to contribute to the preservation of the language.

Lung’Ie [luŋɡíɛ], literalmente “língua do Príncipe” ou “língua da Ilha”, é também conhecido como lungw’Ie, lingw’Ie, principense ou crioulo do Príncipe. Trata-se de uma língua crioula lexificada pelo Português ameaçada, falada na Ilha do Príncipe, em São Tomé e Príncipe, um país multilingue localizado no Golfo da Guiné. Sua origem está ligada ao sequestro e escravização das populações africanas pelos portugueses durante o século XVII. 

Esse dicionário é resultado da pesquisa acadêmica da Dra. Ana Lívia Agostinho, professora da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), e da estudante de graduação Janine Silva, e dos falantes de lung'Ie Severina Gomes Furtado Pernambuco (Dinha) e de José Napoleão (Mestre Juju), que cederam suas vozes para exemplificar a pronúncia das palavras.

O principal objetivo deste trabalho é fornecer um instrumento de apoio para o ensino do Lung’Ie nas escolas da Ilha do Príncipe a fim de contribuir para a preservação da língua.

Os dados apresentados foram coletados por Agostinho, em 2019, durante trabalho de campo na Ilha do Príncipe, com a autorização da comunidade.
