Language Overview

Masri / مصري functions as a distinct spoken language, exhibiting approximately 40% mutual intelligibility with Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) for speakers without prior formal education or exposure. Although frequently categorized as a dialect of Classical or Modern Standard Arabic, Masri evolved as a creole language of Arabic and Coptic, with an Indo-European and smaller Turkic admixture.

Despite being spoken by over 100 million people, Masri remains largely unstandardized orthographically and is underrepresented in official government administration, legislation, and formal print media, where MSA retains official status.
