The doctor dentist Hayim Danon, from Izmir, who researched the history behind the construction of Beth Israel, tells us that to be able to open the synagogue in 1907, his great grandfather Yosef Asher brought the big oriental rugs from his house to cover the synagogue’s dirt floor.
