Damana is a Chichiban language native to the region southern and eastern slopes of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains in northern Colombia. Alternate names for the language include Malayo, Wiwa, Arosario, Arsario, Guamaca, Guamaka, Maracasero, Marocasero, Sancá, Sanja, Sanka, Wamaka. However, these terms are names are incorrectly placed by colonizers and academics, or of neighboring languages/tribes. The collaborators on this project Brigilio and Rodrigo Maestre assert that Damana is the only true name for the language. The term Damana refers to;

Da - strength, Ma - grow  Na - origin

In 2010, the Ministerio de Cultura de Colombia stated that of 13,627 Wiwa people, approximately 60% speak Damana well. In 2007, Ethnologue documented 1,850 speakers of Damana.

This Diccionary was created by Carlee Schulz, a prospective PhD student and a B.A. of Linguistics (Specialization in Language & Society) from UCSD in collaboration with Brigilio Maestre, student of Universidad de Santa Marta, Colombia and Rodrigo Maestre, Mamo (Wiwa spiritual and community leader) and former bilingual educator.
