'Ekwiiy Emak

The name from Cuyamaca Peak, one of the most well-known modern place names derived from the original Kumeyaay name.

Literally "behind the clouds", from 'ekwiiy "clouds" and emak "behind". It is said that when the mountaintop is covered by clouds, it will rain soon.

Shortened by some speakers to 'Ekwiiyemak, as it is written in the Mesa Grande dictionary.
