Cattail reeds are sometimes also called 'esuq, defined in Mesa Grande dictionary as "reed, small round tule".

Note that Cuevas' pronunciation of "e" may often sound like "i" (English "ee" in "see"), whereas to most other speakers it would be a more neutral shwa sound, close to Kumeyaay "a" or English "uh".
