domog

Semantic note

Domog is the broad, relatively unmarked term for the hostile event itself. It does not inherently specify:

• concealment;
• surprise;
• rapid forward movement;
• crowding;
• displacement;
• the weapon or method used.

Those features must come from the context or from a more specialized verb.

Compare

• domog — attack generally.
• ipa’ — prepare the attack by lying in wait.
• dagese’ — attack by suddenly rushing forward.
• rese’ — force the target out and take over the position.

Tightened gloss

To attack or assault; an act of hostile physical aggression against a person, group, animal, or place.

Event structure

These verbs can occur within one complete hostile event:

1. Preparation

ipa’
The attacker conceals himself or herself and waits.

2. Initiation

dagese’
The attacker suddenly rushes forward.

3. Hostile act

domog
The attacker attacks or assaults the target.

4. Possible result

rese’
The target is forced aside, displaced, or deprived of the position.

Thus:

IPA’ → DAGESE’ → DOMOG → RESE’
lie in wait → rush upon → attack → displace

Not every attack contains all four stages:

• A person may domog openly without hiding or rushing.
• A person may dagese’ someone but stop before a serious assault occurs.
• A person may ipa’ unsuccessfully and never get the chance to attack.
• An attack may occur without successfully rese’-ing the defender.
