“Barit” may preserve an older Austronesian or local Bikol-Boie’nen toponym associated with a river crossing or tied/structured span, later attached to the American-era bridge reconstructed in Buhi during the Philippine-American War. While a derivation from an American surname such as ‘Barrett’ remains possible, no documentary evidence yet confirms this, and the phonological shape of ‘Barit’ is also compatible with indigenous Austronesian lexical patterns.
