Etymology: From Spanish entre cuatro, literally “among four” or “between four,” referring to a game played among four participants. The Spanish expression appears to have been lexicalized as a single term and adapted to Boie’nen pronunciation as intrikwatro.

Cultural note: The game is remembered as part of the recreational life of older Boie’nen speakers. It may have been connected with boraw, a traditional prize-bearing game or play session in which winners took home edible prizes, including ibos, bino’tong, and other wrapped rice delicacies. It remains uncertain whether intrikwatro and boraw named the same game, whether intrikwatro was one form of boraw, or whether the terms referred to different aspects of the gathering.

Usage note: The name establishes that four participants were involved, but it does not by itself identify the rules. Do not equate intrikwatro definitively with Spanish burro, brisca, tute, manilla, or any other card game until the remembered method of play has been documented.
