Notes

Osog is a Filipino folk belief that a person with strong life energy can unintentionally make others sick, especially babies and those who are weak. The sudden illness — usually stomach ache, dizziness, or fainting — happens after being greeted or admired. The cure is for the same person to dab their saliva on the victim’s navel or forehead while saying “Pwera osog,” meaning “Away with osog,” to withdraw the overpowering energy. By custom, people say “pwera osog” right after giving a compliment to prevent it.
