A pillory, wooden clamp, stocks, or similar restraining device used to immobilize a person’s lower leg or ankle as punishment, detention, or public confinement. Traditionally consists of two heavy wooden members fitted together to clamp the leg securely, preventing escape while leaving the prisoner standing or seated nearby. By extension, any device that mechanically restrains the lower limbs.
