Notes
Historical note: Philippine law formerly called this governmental unit a barrio. On September 21, 1974, during the Marcos martial-law dictatorship, Presidential Decree No. 557 declared all barrios to be barangays and replaced barrio with barangay throughout existing laws.
Usage note: Historical or increasingly old-fashioned when referring to a governmental unit; barangay is now the official term. Retain barrio in historical names and expressions.

Linguistic History
Borrowed from Spanish **barrio**, “district; neighborhood; dependent village,” ultimately from Hispanic Arabic *bárri*, “exterior.” It is not a cognate or etymon of **barangay**; the two words have unrelated origins.
