The traditional referent need not be a purpose-manufactured orange life ring or modern life jacket. An inflated tire inner tube commonly serves the same practical function.
This usage is independently documented elsewhere in the Philippines: an Inquirer report describes salbabida specifically as the inner rubber tube of a truck wheel used as a river flotation device.

Linguistic History
**Spanish loanword.** From Spanish **salvavidas** ‘life buoy; life preserver’, historically a compound of **salva** ‘save’ + **vidas** ‘lives’. The same borrowing occurs widely in Philippine languages, including Central Bikol, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Ilocano, Maranao, Tagalog, and Waray-Waray. The Boie’nen/Philippine form shows adaptation of Spanish /v/ to */b/**: Spanish “salvavidas”→ /salbabida/ and loss/reanalysis of the final Spanish -s.
