Almost certainly ultimately borrowed from Spanish **semilla** ‘seed’. Spanish *semilla* denotes a seed rather than specifically a seedling. In Boie’nen, the form has developed or conventionalized the sense ‘seedling; planting stock’. In Philippine languages, however, descendants of the loan can undergo semantic broadening or shift toward **propagation material or seedlings**. Cebuano **similya**, for example, is documented for “seedling, especially for transplantation” as well as seed reserved for propagation.
