pue aɽaʔ has both edible and medicinal uses for the Birhor community.

Medicinal values for: dysentery, boils, sores

  • Leaf: The leaf juice (sakam ros or rasa) is considered to have medicinal properties to treat dysentery.
  • A paste prepared from the leaves (sakam) is applied externally to treat boils and sores.

Culinary use: The leaves (sakam) and stems (ɖãʈiʧ) can be eaten raw as well as cooked. It is used as an edible leafy vegetable (aɽaʔ) when cooked and is also eaten fresh (ʈaʈka) as salad.
