Andi is a threatened Northeast Caucasian language spoken by around 5,800 ethnic Andi people who reside in the Botlikh region of Dagestan (see the Wikipedia page for more information).
The data in the Andi Living Dictionary was imported from The Intercontinental Dictionary Series (IDS) to the Living Dictionaries platform in 2024. Each entry contains the attribution to the original IDS publication:
Madzhid Khalilov. 2023. Andi dictionary. In: Key, Mary Ritchie & Comrie, Bernard (eds.) The Intercontinental Dictionary Series. Leipzig: Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. (Available online at http://ids.clld.org/contributions/32, Accessed on 2024-04-01.)
The data import to the Living Dictionaries platform was coordinated by Anna Luisa Daigneault, Diego Córdova Nieto, and Gregory D. S. Anderson at Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages. Russian translations and semantic domain tags were also added to this dictionary. The intern who provided digital assistance for this dictionary import was Maya Hendrix.
We call this platform "Living Dictionaries" because we consider the dictionaries to be constantly evolving and growing over time, as if they were alive. As electronic dictionaries, they are not static, but can constantly be edited, changed and improved.
Speakers of Andi are encouraged to request editing access to this Andi Living Dictionary. At Living Tongues Institute, we would like to welcome fluent speakers to gain online access and create audio recordings for these entries, as well as add further lexical content, sample sentences and multimedia to this project.
For all inquiries, please request access by using the "Contact Us" button in the top right toolbar of the website. If you see any errors or problems with the data, please report them by using the same button. An administrator from the Living Dictionaries platform will respond to your inquiry within 1-2 weeks.
Thanks for exploring the Andi Living Dictionary!
