In Mesa Grande dictionary, described as meaning, "sheltered place where the sun shines"
From verb tekemak "shelters, protects, suns himself"
The "mak" is similar to emak, "behind", and is seen in another name for Mesa Grande, Matetuu Emak "they fought behind it"
May also be spelled Tekumak, similar to tekuwach "the one who was there", nominalized from tewaa (tenyeway). Should not be spelled "Tekamuk" or some other variation, which would imply different pronunciation in Kumeyaay.
