Mesa Grande dictionary: "used for ceremonial painting of the body"
Probably the origin of the placenames Mataahway or Mataahwaay (Mataguay Scout Ranch, meaning "place of white clay in Mesa Grande dictionary) and Mataahwaay or Matehwaay for Warner's Hot Springs.
Herman Osuna Sr., of Santa Ysabel, says matehwaay or mat 'ehwaay is "red or orange clay used as makeup, facepaint" or as a "mud pack for beauty treatment".
