*Orag* is a complex term in the Bikol / Boie’nen languages with multiple meanings, including:
1. Excellence, prowess:
○ Maurag / Maorag (virile, strong)
○ Uragon / Oragen (someone exceptional in strength or ability)
2. Fierceness, cockiness:
○ Maurag (to be angry)
○ Uragan (to clobber)
3. Assertiveness, determination:
○ Oragon (feisty, determined, principled)
4. Expertise:
○ "To be an expert in a rough sort of way, to be a hell of a guy" (Mintz, 1971)
5. Lust, excess:
○ Pagkaurag (lust)
The term has evolved over time, from a pre-colonial symbol of heroic courage to a vilified concept during Spanish colonization, and later reclaimed as a celebrated virtue in Bikolano culture. *Orag* remains ambivalent, conveying both admiration and vulgarity, and is often associated with masculine prowess. It also represents a performative stance valuing domination, verbal assertiveness, and symbolic conquest, particularly in literary and cultural contexts.
