Mumps is a viral infection that can cause swelling in the parotid glands, which are located on either side of the face, below and in front of the ears. This swelling can lead to a noticeable bulge or enlargement in the jaw or neck area.
Mumps is contagious and typically affects children, although adults can also be infected. Symptoms may include:

In most cases, mumps is a self-limiting illness that resolves on its own with rest, hydration, and pain management. However, complications can occur, such as meningitis or orchitis (inflammation of the testicles). Vaccination, such as the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine, is an effective way to prevent mumps.
