Notes

Medicinal values for: Afterbirth back pains

  • Leaf: The paste made from the leaves (sakam) is applied to a woman’s back [shoulder to waist] for relief from afterbirth problems, like back pain.

Interesting fact: The fern is not used as a culinary item; it is used as a medicine with the unique belief that it can attract the opposite sex. A paste prepared from the roots (rehet) of the plant is mixed with food items and served, which, according to the Birhor belief, acts as an agent to develop a feeling of attraction toward the person who has served the food. Whether this is effective has not been tested empirically; however, the consumption of hatʰa ʤoɽi does not have any toxic or side effects.

Categorization: The male ferns are dense and have smaller gaps between the blades, whereas the female ferns are lighter in comparison to male ferns and the gaps between the blades are bigger. The length of the blades of male ferns is slightly bigger than the female ferns.
