The tree has a wide range of uses. It has edible and in particular medicinal value for its fruits and leaves. The immature unripe fruit is eaten as a vegetable and the ripe fruit is eaten raw (berel).
Medicinal values for: high blood pressure, digestive disorders, diarrhoea, dysentery, malaria, wounds, boils, toothache
- Fruit: Boil raw fruit and roast it (berel dʒo hõɽeʧ-kete isin-eka). This is used as a medicine for women whose breasts (kunduram) do not secrete milk after the delivery of a child.
- The unripe (urwa puʈuwa) fruits (dʒo) are eaten in the treatment of digestive disorders and high blood pressure. A decoction of the ripe fruit (pakao-naʔ dʒo) is used to treat persistent diarrhoea and dysentery in children.
- Leaf: The green leaves (sakam) are cooked as treatment for tertiary malaria and for irregular bowel movement in children.
- Leaves (sakam) are applied to the wound as a dressing to help speed the healing process.
- Seed: The seeds (dʒaŋ) are used as a gentle purgative to rid the body of worms.
- Latex: The latex (ʤer) is applied externally to wounds and boils.
- The latex (ʤer) is also applied to the gums to treat toothaches (ɖaʈa hasu).
