The plant possesses both edible as well as medicinal values for the Birhor community.

Medicinal values for: sore throat, wounds, diarrhoea, dysentery, boils.

  • Leaf: young leaves **(**baleʧ sakam) are boiled (hõɽeʧ) first and then ground up (rid) with a mortar (ukʰuɽ) and cooked in mustard oil (sorso sunum).
  • Fruit: Infusion of fruits (dʒo), used as gargle (gaɽgaɽao) against a sore throat. Fruit (dʒo) juice (ros or rasa) is also used for application on wounds.
  • Seed: Oil extracted by grinding (rid) the seeds (dʒaŋ) is given to a person suffering from diarrhoea and dysentery.
  • Bark: A paste prepared from its bark (baklaʔ) is also applied to boils.
