The Birhor community considers this plant to have many medicinal benefits.

Medicinal values for: pimples, itches, boils, wounds and cuts, stomach disorders, skin eruptions (due to poisonous animal bites).

  • Leaf: The leaf oil (sakam sunum) is used to cure skin problems such as pimples, itches, boils, wounds and cuts.
  • The fresh leaves (baleʧ sakam) are considered to treat stomach disorders.
  • A decoction prepared from the leaves (sakam) is helpful in reducing fever.
  • Bark, Root: The crushed (kʰeʧaʔ) bark (baklaʔ) and roots (rehet) are used externally to treat skin eruptions and bites of poisonous animals.

Culinary use: Fresh leaves (baleʧ sakam) and dried leaf powder (rohoɽ sakam lubuʔ) are used as a flavouring for dishes, as a seasoning in other food preparations.
