Traditionally, the roots (rehet) of the grass play an important medicinal role for the Birhor community.
Medicinal values for: burns, snake bites, scorpion stings, weakness, acidity, malarial fever, urinary problems.
- Root: The paste of fresh roots (ʈaʈka rehet) is used for burns, snakebites and scorpion stings.
- A decoction of the roots (rehet) is considered as a tonic for weakness.
- The ash (toreʧ) or roots (rehet) when mixed in water (daʔ) is given to patients to combat stomach acidity.
- Inhalation of the root (rehet) vapour (uhak) is considered good to bring down malarial fever (rua).
- Stem: A decoction prepared by the stems (ɖãʈiʧ) is given to cure urinary tract infections.
